Nancy Willard's "Stranger's Bread" is a surprisingly terrific short story, complete with a lovable main character, a wagon load of kooky animals, and a moral worth learning. I'm not a great fan of David McPhail, but his pen and ink drawings are just right for this one. A 1977 Weekly Reader Children's Book Club selection. And available, of course, from the Mason County Christian School library.
